What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

 

Chinese Medicine has been practiced continually for about 2500 years.  It is the oldest continually practiced medicine professional medicine in the world. This medicine continues to evolve and improve. Research is still continuing in herbal remedies and acupuncture.   Thousands of books have been written documenting this medicine and expanding our knowledge base.  Sometimes people think of it as a backwoods medicine but nothing could further from the truth.  This is a vital growing medicine.  New treatments and protocols are always being developed and tested.

This medicine incorporates acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, herbs,  Tuina (a form or massage), nutrition and exercise.

  • Meridians – By stimulation of points on pathways in your body called “meridians” your body can be put back into balance.
  • Acupressure- Stimulating points on your body using pressure.
  • Acupuncture- Stimulating points on your body using needles.
  • Moxibustion – Stimulating points on your body using heat from burning herbs.
  • Chinese Herbal Formulas - For thousands of years Chinese herbs have been used and modified to increase their effectiveness. They work to restore balance in the body. Each contains a combination of different herbs in ratios found to eliminate side effects and enhance the desired properties of the herbs. Chinese herbal formulas are used for both acute and chronic conditions, some being taken for only days or as needed and others for several months to help the body help itself.
  • Nutrition is a key element in achieving balance and your practitioner is likely to have some suggestions about your diet.
  • Tui-na or Chinese massage may also be found in most clinics. This massage helps restore balance.
  • Exercise in the form of Qigong or Tai Chi may also be recommended by your acupuncture physician.

 

Is this medicine safe?

This medicine is very safe.  There are very few side effects. When practiced correctly there are almost no side effects.  Compared to western medicine where over 100,000 people die each year from medicine practiced correctly it is very safe.
